Dry Eye Affects More Than One in Five Canadian Adults: A West Broadway Optometrist on Assessment and Care

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Oct. 1, 2026 — Canadian research on how common dry eye disease is among adults has prompted Dr. Lili Liang Optometry, an optometrist Broadway Vancouver clinic in Vancouver's West Broadway neighbourhood, to point patients toward its dry eye assessment and treatment services.

Canadian Dry Eye Prevalence Estimated at More Than One in Five Adults

A population-based study published in The Ocular Surface surveyed 5,163 Ontario adults — with a median participant age of 50, 59.5% of them women — and estimated an age- and gender-adjusted Canadian dry eye prevalence of 21.3%, corresponding to roughly 6.3 million people. Prevalence was significantly higher among women, at 24.7%, compared with 18.0% among men, and highest in adults aged 55 to 64, also at 24.7%. The study's lead author was Barbara Caffery, with Clara C. Chan of the University of Toronto's Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences serving as corresponding author.

Screen time has been raised as one contributing factor. Dr. Vivian Hill, a Calgary-based pediatric ophthalmologist who chairs the Council on Advocacy of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, told CBC News in 2023 that staring at a screen drops the blink rate to about 10 per cent of normal. Blinking is what spreads the eye's protective oils, she explained: "The eyelids are little windshield wipers that have oil glands in them that basically smooth the oily tears, the moisturizing tears, over the eyeball." In the same report, Dr. Rana Taji, owner and medical director of Toronto Medical Eye Associates, said she often sees dry eye appear in children as styes, a sign of gland dysfunction made worse by excessive screen time.

Local Dry Eye Treatment in Vancouver Includes Assessment and In-Office Care

At her West Broadway practice, Dr. Lili Liang Optometry offers dry eye treatment in Vancouver beginning with a detailed dry eye assessment that examines the eye's surface, tear production, and blink dynamics. The practice also uses meibography, an infrared imaging technique that produces a detailed image of the meibomian glands inside the eyelids, to help evaluate gland function as part of that assessment. Depending on what the assessment finds, care may include lid hygiene products, prescription drops, or in-office procedures such as ZEST eyelid treatment or Jett Plasma therapy.

Dr. Lili Liang Optometry is accepting new adult patients for dry eye assessments at its West Broadway location.
