Over seven weeks this spring, a small, independent Canadian vodka brand skipped the product pitch and asked one question. The comments section turned into a national conversation over a quarter of a million people joined in.
TORONTO, Sept. 8, 2026 /CNW/ -- The most talked-about thing Iceberg Vodka did this spring wasn't a product push. It was a question. Over a seven-week run, the Canadian challenger brand asked audiences something deceptively simple, "What does it mean to be Canadian?" and then stepped back and let real people answer. They did, by the hundreds of thousands.
The brand built the campaign with creative agency King Street Media around a single idea: stop talking, start listening. Instead of Iceberg talking about itself, everyday Canadians carried the story, and the audience treated the comments section like an open invitation. A marketing prompt turned into a genuine back-and-forth about identity, belonging, and the small things that tie people to this country. It landed in a spring when the question of what it means to be Canadian was already on a lot of minds.
The answers were the campaign. One new Canadian wrote to Instagram: "Canada is beautiful and we all should take care of this beautiful country and people. Talking as an immigrant to this country who is so thankful with the opportunity to live here. I respect and have learned so much from the culture and the amazing people. Thank you for everything." Another viewer, reflected across a lifetime and took to the comments: "I admit that when I was a kid growing up here in the Vancouver area I didn't understand just how amazing it is. 69 years later I am eternally grateful for it. It's easily one of the most beautiful places on earth." A third answer needed only four words: "Being Canadian is being alive."
The sentiment showed up in the numbers. The campaign drew over 770,000 Canadians' attention and majority of those who saw the question were compelled to engage and respond with their own answers
"We didn't set out to define what it means to be Canadian. We set out to ask, and then get out of the way," said Karen Lai Drake, Senior Brand Manager, Iceberg Brands Corporation. "What came back was more honest and more moving than anything we could have scripted."
"The best proof a story is working is when the audience starts telling it back to you," said Mark Simone, Managing Partner, King Street Media. "People didn't just watch. They contributed."
