The new survey from Automatic Trap Company also reveals 93% of Americans are unaware that there is no antidote for most rat and mouse poison, also known as rodenticide.
SONOMA, Calif., Sept. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Automatic Trap Company, the leader in self-resetting traps that are humane and eco-friendly rodent control solutions, announced today that its new national survey revealed that 95% of Americans underestimate the number of pets exposed to rodenticide each year. The new data also showed 28% of Americans know of a pet that has been sickened or died after being exposed by accident to rodenticide. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that more than 100 pets die annually from rodenticide exposure, and it is the most common cause of pet poisonings.
In addition, each year thousands of children across the United States are exposed to rodenticide - commonly known as rat and mouse poison - resulting in significant medical interventions and hospitalizations. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that for children under six, rodenticides are the most frequent reason for pesticide-related visits to healthcare facilities and the second leading cause of pesticide-related hospitalization. Data shows poison control centers log between 12,000 and 15,000 annual reports of rodenticide exposures in children under six years old.
"The data is indeed grim regarding the harm rodenticide inflicts each year to pets and children – and also wildlife," said Blair Calder, President of Automatic Trap Company. "Rodenticides - especially anticoagulant varieties - can cause prolonged, painful suffering in pets that ingest the bait directly, while wildlife falls victim through secondary poisoning after consuming mice or rats that have already ingested rodenticide. This becomes a threat to wildlife such as owls, hawks, and foxes who then accumulate toxins that can result in bleeding, organ failure, and death. There are alternatives to rodenticide that are much more effective that will keep your kids, pets, and wildlife safe."
What can be done:
- Choose safer pest control options - self-resetting automatic traps, exclusion methods, and natural barrier method deterrents reduce risks without compromising efficacy.
- Avoid using rodenticides.
- Raise awareness among neighbors, landlords, and community groups - rodenticide hazards extend beyond individual households.
Benefits of self-resetting automatic traps include:
- Automatic Operation: Ready 24/7 with minimal maintenance, eliminating the need for constant touching or resetting.
- Non-Toxic and Humane: Avoids the dangerous risks posed by poisons, glue, and snap traps - making it safe for use around pets and children and better for the environment.
- Durable and Adaptable: Built to withstand varied environments and installation is easy.

About Automatic Trap Company
Established in 2016, Automatic Trap Company's vision is to eliminate the preventable suffering of rodents - and we feel we are one step closer with every trap we ship. Sadly, the three most common ways to kill rodents - glue traps, snap traps, and poison - are incredibly cruel. Glue traps are an inhumane and unnecessary way to end a rodent's life. Snap traps often fail to kill quickly, and they only work on either rats or mice. Poison results in a slow, painful death and exposes other wildlife, such as predator birds, to the same harm. At Automatic Trap, we are breaking the cycle of inhumane and harmful rodent control. We offer pragmatic solutions that eliminate rodents in the most humane and efficient way possible.
